A linear PA is the last active stage in a transmit chain, where the signal is brought up to its final antenna power level. Unlike a saturated PA — which is run hard up against compression for maximum efficiency — a linear PA is operated several dB below P1dB so the modulation envelope is preserved and adjacent-channel leakage stays inside spectral mask requirements. This trade-off (efficiency for linearity) is unavoidable for modern wideband, high-PAPR waveforms (LTE, 5G NR, OFDM Wi-Fi, multi-tone test signals) where compression destroys EVM and ACLR.

Selection comes down to output power at target back-off (typically rated as P3dB or P-1dB), OIP3, gain, efficiency at back-off (PAE), and thermal performance. Linear PAs typically run from a +5 V supply and are internally matched to 50 Ω so they drop into existing transmit-chain reference designs without external matching networks.

Common applications include cellular base-station and DAS transmit chains, point-to-point microwave backhaul, satellite communications uplinks, and broadband CATV / HFC head-ends. AEC-Q100 grade-2 qualified variants are denoted with a "-W" suffix.
