A linear driver sits between the modulator (or the upconvert mixer) and the final-stage power amplifier in a transmit chain. Its job is to supply the PA with enough RF input power to reach the target output level — without itself becoming the source of intermodulation, EVM degradation, or adjacent-channel leakage. That makes output third-order intercept (OIP3) and output 1 dB compression (OP1) the dominant selection criteria, with gain and supply current as secondary trade-offs.

Modern wideband, high-PAPR waveforms (LTE, 5G NR, OFDMA Wi-Fi) demand drivers with substantial back-off headroom — typical designs operate the driver 8–12 dB below P1dB so the modulation stays clean even on signal peaks. Linear drivers run on +5 V supplies and are internally matched to 50 Ω so they integrate cleanly into existing PA reference designs.

Common applications include cellular base-station and DAS transmit chains, point-to-point microwave backhaul, satellite ground terminals, and any wideband transmit path where ACLR or EVM is the gating spec. AEC-Q100 grade-2 qualified variants are denoted with a "-W" suffix.
