High Linearity Gain Blocks
Broadband, Internally Matched Amplifiers with Excellent Linearity
About high-linearity gain blocks: 50 Ω-matched amplifiers optimized for OIP3 and OP1 — the inter-stage workhorses for transmit chains and any signal path that has to handle strong adjacent signals. Read more »Read less «
A gain block is a 50 Ω matched amplifier that is dropped into a signal chain to recover the loss from cables, filters, splitters, and mixers. Unlike a low-noise amplifier — which is designed for the front of a receiver where noise figure dominates — a gain block is designed for the middle of the chain, where the dominant concern is linearity under multi-tone signals. The "high linearity" qualifier means the part has been optimized for the strong third-order intercept point (OIP3) and 1 dB compression (OP1) needed by modern wideband, high-PAPR waveforms.
Selection of a high-linearity gain block typically pivots on three numbers: OIP3 (drives coexistence with strong neighbors and intermod-free dynamic range), OP1 (sets how hard the part can be driven before compression robs modulation accuracy), and gain flatness across the band of interest. Supply current and package size are secondary trade-offs once those three are inside the spec window.
High-linearity gain blocks are used as inter-stage amplifiers in cellular base-station and DAS transmit chains, satellite communications transponders and ground terminals, instrumentation receive paths, broadband CATV and HFC distribution, and any defense or industrial system that has to coexist with strong adjacent signals. AEC-Q100 grade-2 qualified variants are denoted with a "-W" suffix.
The table below lists the active high-linearity gain block portfolio sorted by SKU, with frequency range, gain, OIP3, OP1, and package. Click any SKU for the full data sheet, S-parameters, and reference designs.
